Counselling for Mental Health Issues and Disorders
If you have been diagnosed with a mental health issue such as anxiety, depression or stress, there are many ways in which counselling can help you to understand and manage them. These issues are a very human response to what is happening in our lives, when we feel helpless or overwhelmed. Counselling gives you the time and space to examine the underlying reasons for your symptoms, and we can develop strategies to manage them and the situations that have given rise to them.
If you have been diagnosed with a psychological disorder such as bipolar disorder, OCD, or BDD, you may be dealing with repeating patterns of negative thoughts and an inner voice that makes you feel hopeless, helpless and stuck. Through counselling we can look at ways to recognise these, and where they come from. We can then come up with strategies to counteract them. As you develop these strategies into habits, your ability to deal with these thoughts will also develop.
You may feel overwhelmed and labelled by your diagnosis. Counselling provides you with a space to make sense of your diagnosis without worrying what another person might think or say about it. We can explore what the diagnosis means for you and your life, and how you can take ownership of living your life with it. A well-managed psychological disorder is not a life sentence, and need not stop you from living the life you want. Alongside the right support from professionals and the important people in your life, counselling helps you to look at your life choices and how to live them.
